I have submitted the following to White House on http://www.healthreform.gov
Before I propose anything or ask questions, I have following story to tell. Don't worry it is nothing dramatic.
Recently I went to oral surgeon for tooth extraction procedure and that time I was asked to make decision for type of anesthesia. My Oral Surgeon's office checked for my coverage and said that I am covered for general anesthesia. I opted for General Anesthesia, knowing that I am covered for it under the plan. Now during claim processing, My dental insurance company have denied the claim, indicating that General Anesthesia is covered "only" when 2 or more tooth are extracted as part of "company benefit plan" and please note, I am covered under "so called" premium insurance plan. I have tried to go through benefits library and try to find limitations on General Anesthesia and found none. I am scratching my head here that who is "rightfully" responsible for this claim. I have following options, pay up ~$240. Or go and keep fighting, or go to court.
Though I am one of the fortunate one to vbe able to pay ~$240, however, whichever option I choose, As a system, we have already incurred additional cost
- In lost productivity hours - exchange between insurance company, benefit administrator and myself.
- Insurance company - Keeping more customer service representative, busy in denying customer claims
- Doctor, Billing Assistant sending bills to me and resubmitting claims to insurance company.
All of the above have raised the cost of health care system for everybody. Would it be so difficult to create a concise document to list what is covered and what is not. By creating a vague description, insurance companies purposefully have created a system in which system is sucked out of sensebility for profit. And this, this is just one example of broken system.
Before we do anything, why should not we be fixing broken system?
1. Republican plan or be it democrats plan, can we, as a public, have atleast have a law which directs insurance companies to provide clear description of what is covered or what is not? Please... please..
2. Create some form of criminal liability and limited financial liability for doctors so that torts/suite related costs can be reduced.
3. Pharmaceutical companies have to make profits but at some point humanity has to trump over profits. If we can ask Pharmaceutical companies to provide subsidized cheaper options if total cost of treatment goes beyond 20-30% of household income, it will help poor people (as well as middle class).
Just final note,
Based on my experience, Single Payer option definitely looks promising. Since I believe that most of the time, I may not be seeing the full picture, can somebody from White House explain why it is not possible? And have public debate on Single Payer option?
Lets see what is the response?
