The below article summarizes yet another panel discussion
highlighting the consumer market. The problem with IP is that it is not exactly what the customer wants, is hard
to integrate, and verify because you did not create the RTL. All of this leaves
the IP vendor with large support costs to customize their IP to the customer’s
application. IP vendor should have a high margin answer to
the mass customization of IP.. Which in return requires higher investment during development cycle.
"Maybe EDA is in need of a metamorphosis to appeal to a trend seen in the
consumer arena—lower average selling prices, and still be highly profitable."
